Kambodscha oder Karriere?
Phnom Penh stand plötzlich im Raum. Bisher hatten wir unseren immer wieder aufkeimenden Wunsch, einmal in Südostasien zu leben, stets als unrealistisch abgetan. Schließlich sind wir mit unseren Spezialisierungen auf deutsches Recht und deutsche Texte nicht gerade prädestiniert dafür. Doch mit der kurzfristigen Beendigung des Arbeitsverhältnisses meines Mannes und seinem Wunsch nach einer beruflichen Umorientierung ergab sich plötzlich ein schicksalhaftes Schlupfloch. Während ich als Freiberuflerin ortsunabhängig arbeite, entschied sich mein Mann sich für eine Auszeit auf eigene Kosten, um beruflich einiges auszuprobieren und zu überdenken.
Nachdem wir seit Jahren regelmäßig längere Individualreisen durch Südostasien unternehmen, fühlten wir uns immer wieder zu Kambodscha hingezogen - sowohl zu den Menschen als auch der faszinierenden Kultur. Phnom Penh als wuseliger und pulsierender Mittelpunkt hat es uns besonders angetan. Hier haben zahlreiche Organisationen ihren Sitz, die sich für die Khmer-Kultur einsetzen, hier ist der wirtschaftliche, künstlerische und musikalische Mittelpunkt des Landes, hier wird gebaut, gegründet, gedacht und gemacht. Die Expat-Community ist bestens über Facebook und LinkedIn organisiert, wenn es um Kultur oder Kulinarik geht, um Mobiliar-Verkauf oder Nachmietersuche. Aufgrund der hohen Fluktuation an "Expats" sind möblierte Appartments offenbar nicht allzu schwer zu finden. Darüber hinaus gibt es Blogs und Bücher auf Englisch. In Berlin wird außerdem ein Kambodschakunde-Seminar angeboten, das wir noch besuchen wollen, um mehr über Traditionen und Gepflogenheiten zu erfahren.
Die Sprache auf die Schnelle zu lernen, ist hingegen so gut wie unmöglich. Weder der "Kauderwelsch"-Führer noch Youtube lassen die Hoffnung aufkommen, jemals einen Satz Khmer sprechen zu können, ohne Zunge und Hirn zu verknoten. Aber wir wollen bei einer Sprachschule vor Ort wenigstens die wichtigsten Grundlagen lernen, um uns verständigen und Kontakte knüpfen zu können.
Den entscheidenden Kick gab uns zu Beginn unserer insgesamt ca. dreimonatigen Planung die Beratung beim Raphaelswerk. Nach dem Skype-Termin mit Frau Banisch, für die Kambodscha auch Neuland war und die für uns alle möglichen Quellen anzapfte, war für uns klar: Wir wagen den Schritt. Sie war auch nach dem Beratungsgespräch für uns da - ein gutes Gefühl bei kleinen Zweifeln und Fragen, die immer mal wieder aufkommen. Frau Banisch bestätigte uns auch in unserem Plan, unseren Aufenthalt zunächst auf Ende des Jahres zu begrenzen. Meine Kunden könnten diese Zeitspanne verkraften, innerhalb derer wir mit Zeitverschiebung kommunizieren. Unsere derzeitige Wohnung lösen wir auf und lagern unsere Möbel ein. So sind wir frei und offen, uns nach unserer Rückkehr zu entscheiden, wo wir leben möchten. Vielleicht ist zu bleiben ja auch eine Möglichkeit. Wer weiß …
